The Dirt: Dec 2023

reflections on 2023, and looking to the year ahead

In Today’s Newsletter:

Reflecting & Manifesting

I’m so proud of all that we’ve accomplished in the last year. We’ve gathered over 11,000 wormies (!!!) who share a passion for books and reading and togetherness. At this point last year, we were only 2,000 baby larvae—look at us now 🥹. I’m also so excited and proud that we launched Book Clubs, a whole app redesign, & our community discord! Time really flies when you’re having fun :’)

Looking to next year, I’m really excited to formalize our community-ownership model. Becoming a cooperative marks a pivotal moment in worm lore, empowering us all to shape the future of our community, and share the wealth that we create together. I’m also excited to see our community grow and expand, and to give you all some really fun app updates we’ve been working on over at Team Worm !!

Thank you for making this year remarkable—here's to many more worms, so much fun together, and always the joy of reading.

Book Club Highlights

About a month ago, we introduced our shiny new Book Club feature into the app. It’s been so much fun seeing how we find new ways to gather and connect. If you have a couple minutes, we’d love your feedback on how this feature is working for you.

We’re thrilled to highlight some book clubs that caught our eye!

book clubs you should join

Belletrist (hosted by Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss) is often reading the hot new lit-fic. They host IG lives with the authors almost every month!

Academia worms! Unite!! On a mission to save the world, AND read more than just Google Scholar

Black Bookworms Club is brand new! This club is for worms who are Black, to read Black authors and center Black experiences.

Spicy Book Club for sex-posi bodies! Mia Davis will have you cackling with her brilliant, honest, and hilarious hot takes. Plus you’ll probably learn a lil somethin too

A Worm Winter Reading Challenge

The worm winter reading challenge is here! As I got cozy for this solstice and asked @carrie_underworm for her famous annual winter wormy outfit, I’ve been seeing a lot of folks post about being stressed to meet their annual reading number. We originally chose to do a seasonal reading challenge instead of the traditional year-long goal because we wanted a no-pressure, more joyful experience, where everyone gets a badge just for signing up. I hope you’ll join me in setting a stress-free reading goal for A Worm Winter, and get your wormy a cute little mitten, like mine:

I can’t stop admiring how hot my winter wormy is

But as you know, Bookworm is built by us for us so… I’m curious:

Do you wish you could set an annual reading goal?

either way, we'll still keep our seasonal challenges :)
